Area Information About Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire is a traditional English county situated at the northern edge of the south west region of the United Kingdom, roughly two hours from London and about one hour and thirty minutes from Birmingham.
It covers an area of 1,025 square miles including the largest Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the country. Essentially a rural county, it has been known since Roman times for farming, forestry and horticulture with an industrial history featuring the wool trade.
Gloucestershire has some picturesque villages, towns and hamlets some of which are not well known and are often hidden in small valleys in the Cotswold hills, it is well worth seeking some of these hidden gems out, that are just a few short miles away from the popular tourist destinations. These include Stow-on the wold, Bourton on the water, Moreton in the Marsh, Cirencester, just to name a few in the northern Cotswold. Of course there are many more such as Fairford with its historic church and many brasses laid into the floor and was a major wool town in its time. Cirencester another wool town with its church placed prominently in the market place. Of course you cannot forget its Roman passed and a Visit to the Museum is well worth a trip as is the trip up the church tower if this is still possible which give some amazing views over the town especially up over Cirencester Park, I can remember doing this often as a young boy on our school holidays.
There are of course other places to go and visit such as Cheltenham, famous of course for its racecourse and racing calendar, Cheltenham now hosts many major Festival throughout the year and is well known for these, which mainly happen in the Montpelier area of the town, just where the town hall is. Above the town hall is the Queen Hotel a very impressive building.
There is of course Gloucester which is often forgotten and passed bye, to be honest in years gone bye it has suffered a lack of investment by the powers that be who have seen fit to send it to such places as Cirencester / Cheltenham and the Cotswolds where the affluent have moved to from some of the major cities and spoilt the countryside. (This is my own personal opinion) Now slowly though things are improving. Gloucester has many interesting and historic places to visit you just have to find them out and know where to look
I shall name a few but please do give it a visit. We have of course the Gloucester Cathedral where some of harry potter was filmed, The Beatrix Potter shop / museum at College Court, Gloucester Folk Museum , The Waterways Museum situated in the up and coming area of the city the docks. Why not stand between the converted warehouses close you you eyes facing the dock basin and turn back your imagination to the time when it would have been filled with tall ships and the carter’s taking the good to their destinations. There is Gloucester Museum on the the edge of the docks. There are of course many eateries in the city which are well worth finding out. Why not park your car and walk to all the above, which is easily do able in a short time, while you do this walk why not look Up at what remains of the old Gloucester (Not the faceless shops as we see in all our towns and cities). I would suggest starting at the Cathedral and walking your way through to the Waterways Museum visiting some of the places I have mentioned. You could drop into the Robert Rakes Hostelry on the way around, Robert Rakes was of course the co-founder of the Sunday Schools which then ultimately gave us the state education system. Off course don,t forget Gloucester’s Roman past it was called Glevum and then there is Gloucester Ruby Club home of the Famous Cherry & Whites
If anybody ever reads this they will hunt me down for not mentioning the Forest Of Dean. This for me is another day. Please give it a visit I will revisit this paragraph soon.
There have been many bad things written about Gloucester but we can all write bad things about anywhere and all places have bad points, I would say come and have a look and spend 1/2 a day going around some of the places I have mentioned and more. Why not plan your visit when The Cherry & Whites are playing at home and sample some of the atmosphere of Kingholm and the SHED (I am not a ruby fan, but the place buzzies).
Windsor Marquees have been hiring marquees in Gloucestershire for over 19 years, serving businesses, leisure facilities, accommodation and entertainment venues with a wide range of marquee and canopy hire. We are able to cover all areas of Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas, and we have our operations based in the distinct heart of the county. We have provided marquees for weddings, festivals, corporate hospitality events and local leisure attractions and venues, so Windsor Marquees can cater for all of your marquee and canopy hire needs and requirements. There are many venues in Gloucestershire providing lovely settings for your wedding day often at exorbitant prices , in my view they want your money but not the inconvenience of you being there. When you plan a reception in a marquee you must not forget that you can plan the event on how you want it, You write the rules not the venue. Weddings don’t have to be great lavish affairs involving every distant retaliative since Gladstone small personal gathering can be just as good if not better! That is of course if you have the space, if not why not approach a local farmer and ask if you can rent a field for a short time don’t forget to allow time for set up and break down of the services involved. Yours guests could camp and then use the marquee in the morning for breakfast. Your wedding should be one of the best days in your life don’t be hustled and bustled about like a piece of luggage by the venue. Let be honest most venues want your money in and out as quick as possible and no hassle, that is why most of them smother you in terms and conditions.
